Thousands turn out for Lantern Parade

What a spectacular event for Gorseinon on Tuesday 30th November when nearly 5000 people turned out to watch the Father Christmas and Lantern Parade. Seven local schools, cubs and beavers, various community groups along with many local people attended workshops to make the lanterns for the event. The Arts For Us Team from the City and County of Swansea ran the workshops in schools, clubs and in Penyrheol Theatre throughout November to create the magnificent lanterns that lit up the streets.

Over 800 people took part in the parade including over 300 lantern bearers, marching bands, stilt walkers, jugglers and of course Father Christmas! Gorseinon Town Mayor, Malcolm Curtice turned on the Christmas lights in spectacular fashion, with stunning pyrotechnics. The event culminated at Somerfield car park, where Kevin Johns along with special guests kept the crowds entertained and the evening ended with communal carol singing.

The event was organised by Nikki Neale, Gorseinon College Community Arts Advisor in partnership with Gorseinon Town Council, Arts For Us and Gorseinon Development Trust.

If you would like to be involved in the parade next year or in any of the Arts Festival events planned for the summer, please contact Nikki Neale on 01792 890722 or email nikki.neale@gorseinon.ac.uk
